Bethlehem and The Shepherd’s Fields / Betlehem en Herdersvelde

Bethlehem meaning “House of Bread” is situated approximately 12km south of Jerusalem.   The first mention of this village is in the time of Jacob.  Jacob’s beloved wife, Rachel, died near Bethlehem and her grave can still be seen today on the road between Jerusalem and Bethlehem (Genesis 35:19; 48:7).

The Biblical account of Ruth and Boaz also took place in Bethlehem (Ruth 1:1, 22, 2).

Jesse, the father of David lived here and David was anointed as King in Bethlehem (1 Samuel 16).

Bethlehem is also known as the City of David (1 Samuel 20:6, Luke 2:4).

The prophet Micah prophesied Bethlehem as the place where the Messiah would be born (Micah 5:1).   This prophesy was fulfilled in the New Testament (Matthew 2:3-9).

The Shepherd’s Fields were situated outside Bethlehem (Luke 2:8-20).

Christians, come from all over the world, to visit the Church of the Nativity which was built in 332 AD by Emperor Constantine.   The church is built over a cave, which per tradition, is the stable where Jesus was born.

Die betekenis van Betlehem is “Huis van Brood”.  Betlehem is ongeveer 12km suid vanaf Jerusalem.  Die eerste keer waar hierdie dorp genoem word is in die tyd van Jakob.  Jakob se beminde vrou, Ragel, is naby Betlehem oorlede en haar graf kan nogsteeds vandag op die pad tussen Jerusalem en Betlehem gesien word (Genesis 35:19; 48:7).

Die Bybelse relaas van Rut en Boas het ook in Betlehem plaasgevind (Rut 1:1, 22, 2).

Jesse, die vader van Dawid, het in Betlehem gewoon en Dawid is in Betlehem as gesalfde Koning aangestel (1 Samuel 16).

Betlehem is ook bekend as die Stad van Dawid (1Samuel 20:6, Lukas 2:4).

Die profeet Miga het Betlehem as die plek waar Christus gebore sou word voorspel (Miga 5:1).  Hierdie voorspeling is vervul in die Nuwe Testament (Matteus 2:3-9).

Die herdersvelde was buite Betlehem geleë. (Lukas 2:8-20)

Christene van oor die wereld besoek die “Church of the Nativity” wat in 332 n.C. deur Keiser Constantine gebou is.  Die kerk is oor ‘n grot gebou en volgens tradisie is dit die stal waar Jesus gebore is
